Horseradish is a bold, spicy condiment often enjoyed with roast beef, seafood, and sausages. But for those following a gluten-free diet, questions often arise: Is horseradish gluten free? Can you safely add it to your meals without triggering gluten sensitivity or celiac symptoms?
The short answer is pure horseradish is naturally gluten free, but the story becomes more complicated when you start looking at prepared horseradish, creamy versions, and sauces. Let’s explore the details.
What Is Horseradish?
Horseradish is a root vegetable from the same family as mustard and wasabi. When grated or ground, it releases volatile compounds that give it that iconic heat and pungency. Most people don’t eat raw horseradish on its own; instead, it’s often mixed with vinegar, salt, and sometimes sugar to create prepared horseradish.
From there, manufacturers use it as a base to create horseradish sauces and creamy blends, which may contain a host of other ingredients—some of which may contain gluten.

Is Prepared Horseradish Gluten Free?
When it comes to prepared horseradish, the gluten content depends largely on how it’s processed and what ingredients are added.
For example, here at QuickSupply, we currently have these two horseradish products:
1) Horseradish Powder
This seem to be the just the powder which may not contain gluten however, the product does not say gluten free so it’s better to ask the manufacturer.
2) Prepared Horseradish
This one is prepared horseradish which may or may not contain gluten so it’s again better to ask the manufacturer however the 1st option in its powder form seems to be the safest if it’s 100% pure horseradish.
What to Look Out For:
While the horseradish root itself doesn’t contain gluten, additives like preservatives, thickeners, or even vinegar made from gluten-containing grains can compromise its gluten-free status.
• Modified food starch: May be derived from wheat.
• Vinegar: If made from barley or malt, it contains gluten.
• Fillers and stabilizers: Sometimes contain gluten-based ingredients.
• Cross-contamination: Manufacturing in a facility that processes wheat can be risky for those with celiac disease.
To be safe, always read the label carefully and look for a certified gluten-free logo.
Is Horseradish Sauce Gluten Free?
Horseradish sauce usually combines prepared horseradish with other ingredients like mayonnaise, sour cream, or mustard. While these additions make it milder and creamier, they also introduce the risk of gluten.
Again, it depends on the brand and ingredients. Some horseradish sauces are labelled gluten free, while others are not.
Tips:
• Check the ingredients list for wheat, barley, or rye.
• Look for brands that are certified gluten free.
• If in doubt, reach out to the manufacturer.
Is Horseradish Gluten and Dairy Free?
Now let’s address a common question from people with multiple food sensitivities: Is horseradish gluten and dairy free?
Pure horseradish root is both:
• Gluten free
• Dairy free
Prepared horseradish:
Often gluten free and dairy free, but check for additives.
Creamy or sauce versions:
Often not dairy free, and gluten status varies.
If you’re avoiding both gluten and dairy, steer clear of creamy varieties unless they are specifically labelled gluten and dairy free.
